Flexible coupling performance and characteristics of commonly used materials

Coupling refers to a device that connects two shafts or shafts and rotating parts, and turns together in the process of transmitting motion and power, and does not disengage under normal circumstances. Sometimes, it is also used as a safety device to prevent the connected parts from being subjected to excessive loads, and it plays the role of overload protection.
The elastic coupling utilizes a pin with a flexible sleeve at one end and is installed in the flange holes of the coupling halves to realize the mating of the coupling halves. The elastic coupling has the function of shock absorption.  The working temperature is -20-70 degrees, the size of the shaft hole can be selected in the range of 9-220 degrees, the torque can be as small as 6.3, and the maximum can be up to 16000N.M. In addition to having excellent cushioning and shock absorption performance, the bearing capacity of the bearing is also more significant. It is suitable for occasions where the speed and load change exceedingly and high or low temperatures.
The elastic coupling has the advantages of simple structure, reasonable structure, convenient maintenance, interchangeable symmetry on both sides, and long service life. Elastic couplings are usually made by cutting round metal rods. The commonly used materials are aluminum alloy, stainless steel, and engineering plastics. Flexible couplings use parallel or spiral grooving systems to adapt to various deviations and transmit torque. Elastic couplings usually have excellent performance and price advantages. In many practical applications of stepping and servo systems, flexible couplings are products. The one-piece design enables the elastic coupling to realize the benefits of zero-torque transmission torque and no maintenance.
Relative couplings are relatively used nowadays. Rigid couplings have no elastic components and do not have shock absorption and cushioning functions. Flexible couplings are suitable for connecting two coaxial transmission shafts and have compensation for the relative offset of the two axes. Shock absorption, wear resistance, and cushioning performance, the elastic coupling has a large structure. It is reasonable and straightforward, easy maintenance, symmetrical interchangeable on both sides, long life, allows significant axial movement, and cushioning, shock absorption, wear resistance Wait for performance. In addition to corrosion resistance, the elastic coupling also increases torque capacity and rigidity, and can even reach twice that of similar products made of aluminum alloy. However, this increased torque and inflexibility will be offset to some extent by the increased mass and inertia. Sometimes the adverse effects will outweigh its advantages so that users have to find other forms of coupling.
Coupling type selection When selecting the coupling type, the following items should be considered.
① The size and nature of the required transmission torque, the requirements for buffering and vibration reduction functions, and whether resonance may occur.
②Due to manufacturing and assembly errors, the deformation of the shaft load and thermal expansion leads to the relative displacement of the two shafts caused by the relative movement between the components.
③ The allowable external dimensions and installation methods are the operation space necessary for easy assembly, adjustment, and maintenance. For large couplings, it should be possible to disassemble and assemble the shaft without axial movement.
When choosing, please note that the rated torque must be higher than the system load torque. The rated torque has taken into account the variable load factor during operation. Therefore, it is not necessary to adjust the estimated torque value when selecting. Commonly used elastic couplings now have their standard models. Flexible couplings are widely used couplings in equipment. The common types of elastic couplings are divided into plum blossom elastic couplings, elastic diaphragm couplings, star-shaped elastic couplings, and aluminum alloy flexible couplings. The elastic coupling is a stud made of several non-metallic elastic materials, placed in the flange hole of the two coupling halves, and the stud realizes the mating of the two coupling halves. The coupling has a simple structure and is easy to manufacture. It is convenient to install, disassemble, and replace the elastic element without moving the two linkages.
